Okay, so I stumbled across this really cute piece of artwork the other day, and it totally inspired me. It’s one of those things where you see it and you just *know* you have to create something equally charming, but, like, edible. I’ve been experimenting in the kitchen a lot lately, trying to find that perfect balance between visually appealing and downright delicious. And, well, this artwork definitely gave me the creative push I needed. So, without further ado, let’s get baking!
Sally: A Culinary Creation
Inspired by a delightful image, I’ve decided to craft a batch of whimsical sugar cookies. They’re light, sweet, and decorated to reflect the joyful spirit of the artwork that sparked this whole adventure. These aren’t your average sugar cookies; we’re going for a pastel paradise that will brighten up any afternoon tea party (or, you know, a solo Netflix binge…no judgement!).
### Cookie Ingredients:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Icing Ingredients:
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Gel food coloring (pink, green, yellow, blue)
Instructions:
Let’s start with the cookies:
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Seriously, don’t skimp on this step. A good creamed mixture makes all the difference.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. This ensures everything is evenly distributed and your cookies don’t turn out…weird.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix! Overmixing leads to tough cookies. No bueno.
- Divide the dough in half, flatten each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Chilling the dough prevents it from spreading too much during baking.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes. I went with some simple circles and flower shapes.
- Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving a little space between them.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown. Keep a close eye on them! Sugar cookies burn easily.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Now for the fun part: the icing!
- In a large bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, corn syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth. The corn syrup gives the icing a nice shine.
- Divide the icing into several smaller bowls, depending on how many colors you want to use.
- Add a few drops of gel food coloring to each bowl and stir until you achieve your desired shades.
- Decorate the cooled cookies with the icing. You can use piping bags for more intricate designs, or just spread the icing on with a knife for a more rustic look. I went for a combination of both!
- Let the icing set completely before serving. This usually takes a couple of hours.
And there you have it! Sally-inspired sugar cookies. They’re almost too pretty to eat…almost. Enjoy!
